Disney+ Tags Wrong Will Smith In Tweet About His New Show

In a tweet celebrating the upcoming National Geographic series Welcome to Earth, Disney+ incorrectly tags podcaster Will Smith instead of the actor.

Disney+ tags the wrong Will Smith in its tweet about the actor’s new show Welcome to Earth. One of the most well-known performers in the world, Smith is beloved for his roles in projects like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Independence Day, and Men in Black. He’s been nominated for two Academy Awards for his work in the critically acclaimed films The Pursuit of Happyness and But. In recent years, Smith starred as Deadshot in 2016’s Suicide Squad and took on the role of The Genie in Disney’s live-action Aladdin, following in the footsteps of the great Robin Williams.

Smith is set to continue his work with Disney through a planned Aladdin sequel, as well as the upcoming National Geographic series Welcome to Earth. The six-episode show will invite viewers along as Smith explores the world. He’ll be joined by experts guiding him through volcanoes, oceans, deserts, and other exciting locations. Welcome to Earth‘s first trailer was released in September 2021 and teased Smith in a number of thrilling situations. The series is set to debut on December 8.

During Disney+ Day, the streamer teased many upcoming projects, including Welcome to Earth. However, in Disney+‘s tweet about the show’s new trailer, it accidentally tagged the podcaster Will Smith instead of the actor. Check out the tweet and a screenshot of the error below.

Wrong Will Smith Disney+ Welcome to Earth Tweet

Ironically, the actor Will Smith isn’t actually on Twitter. However, the podcaster Will Smith seems to be used to getting confused with the Oscar nominee, as his Twitter profile notes he’s “not that Will Smith.” He also tweeted about the mistake himself a couple of hours after the tweet went out, saying “The best part of this is that I’m also tagged in every subsequent tweet. Maybe I should get free Disney+ for life because this series of tweets will haunt me for years.

Considering the number of tweets Disney+ has sent out for Disney+ Day, it’s not too surprising one contained a mistake. However, the incorrectly tagged Will Smith makes a fair point that it’s unfortunate Disney+ created a thread of announcements instead of using separate tweets. This means other actors like Patrick Dempsey, Andy Samberg, and Bette Midler were also tagged in multiple tweets instead of the one for their project. Still, the error shouldn’t impact anticipation for Welcome to Earth, which looks like an exciting exploration of all the world has to offer. Due to Smith’s popularity and timing the show’s release for around the holidays, Welcome to Earth seems poised to be a success for Disney+.
