Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Movie Reportedly Begins Filming In March 2022

Writer/director Zack Snyder’s upcoming Star Wars-inspired, science-fiction epic, Rebel Moon, will reportedly begin filming in March of next year.

Director Zack Snyder’s upcoming science-fiction epic, Rebel Moon, will reportedly begin filming in March of next year. Following his work bringing comic books to life courtesy of Watchmen, Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, Snyder recently teamed up with Netflix to release Army of the Dead earlier this year. The success of that film and its multiple spinoffs in development has helped to further evolve Snyder’s partnership with the streamer: he’s also set to helm a massive sci-fi blockbuster in Rebel Moon.

Rebel Moon is said to be inspired by an idea Snyder pitched to Lucasfilm about a decade ago. The pitch revolved around a more mature take on George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away. However, Snyder’s Star Wars inevitably got lost in the shuffle once Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. Now, Snyder has reworked this idea into Rebel Moon, which he will produce and direct based on a script he’s co-written with Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead) and Kurt Johnstad (300). Via the film’s official synopsis, it will follow a young woman, (Sofia Boutella), who must travel from her faraway space colony to neighboring planets to recruit warriors to combat an intergalactic warlord. In addition to Snyder, Rebel Moon is being produced by Deborah Snyder via Stone Quarry along with longtime producer, Wesley Coller, and Eric Newman of Grand Electric.

According to Production Weekly (via Rebel Moon Updates), Rebel Moon will reportedly begin filming on March 1st, 2022, and run until August 31st, 2022. The film was expected to enter production next year, but no concrete dates or filming locations were known until now. That being said, production will take place in Inyo County, California.

It’s worth reiterating that Rebel Moon has been a side project of Snyder’s for quite some time. So, it comes as no surprise that production is moving along swiftly and locations have likely already been scouted. Speaking of, Death Valley National Park in Inyo California was used as a filming location in Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi. The director has compared Rebel Moon’s scope and scale to that of Man of Steel‘s Krypton scene on steroids, inspired by the work of Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and, of course, Star Wars.

The success of Disney+’s The Mandalorian has proven that audiences very much crave fresh, yet nostalgic space adventures. Snyder has expressed his hope that Rebel Moon will become a massive IP and new, gargantuan sci-fi franchise. Following his tumultuous time with Warner Bros./DC Films, it’s safe to say Snyder and Netflix are a match made in heaven, allowing for the creative freedom a filmmaker like Snyder deserves. While Netflix hasn’t set a release date for Rebel Moon yet, it shouldn’t be expected before 2023.
